Mind the GAP

Mind the GAP is een nieuwe online trainingstool over wetenschappelijke integriteit voor zowel doctorandi als meer ervaren onderzoekers, en is gezamenlijk ontwikkeld door VLIR en de vijf Vlaamse universiteiten.

Deze Engelstalige tool omvat een inleiding tot wetenschappelijke integriteit en focust o.a. op de relatie tussen doctorandi en hun mentors. Uitgebreid wordt ingegaan op hoe je alle fases van je onderzoek het beste aanpakt: van proefopzet en Research Data Management tot het rapporteren van resultaten, omgaan met belangenconflicten, wetenschapscommunicatie en de evaluatie van onderzoek(ers). Een hoofdstuk is daarnaast ook gewijd aan hoe het mis kan gaan en hoe om te gaan met potentiële inbreuken en fraude. Tot slot is er ook aandacht voor het gebruik van persoonsgegevens (AVG), privacywetgeving en ethiek.

De tool is niet zomaar een aaneenschakeling van teksten maar combineert vele leervormen en vertrekt vanuit de ervaring die de universiteiten hebben met online leren, blended learning en permanente vorming. Oefeningen en een gedetailleerde test zorgen voor zelfreflectie en een groter bewustzijn voor alle aspecten van integriteit. De basis is de Europese ALLEA-code, ontwerpversies van de tool zijn uitgebreid geëvalueerd door startende en senior onderzoekers en door ondersteunend personeel. Mind the GAP is voor alle onderzoekers beschikbaar via het UGent Ufora leerplatform.

De tool is gefinancierd met OJO-middelen van de Vlaamse overheid, gericht op de omkadering van jonge onderzoekers en kreeg al een eervolle vermelding als een van de beste tien inzendingen (van 43) voor een oproep van de Europese Raad naar Best Practices in Promoting Academic Integrity during COVID-19.

Mind the GAP is a new online training tool on research integrity for both PhD students and more experienced researchers, and was jointly developed by VLIR and the five Flemish universities.

This tool (in English) includes an introduction to research integrity and focuses among others on the relationship between PhD students and their mentors. It elaborates on how best to approach all phases of your research: from the design and Research Data Management to reporting results, dealing with conflicts of interest, science communication and evaluating research (ers). A chapter is also dedicated to how things can go wrong and how to deal with potential violations and fraud. Finally, attention is also paid to the use of personal data (GDPR), privacy legislation and ethics.

The tool is not just a succession of texts but combines many forms of learning and draws on the experience that universities have with online learning, blended learning and continuing education. Exercises and a detailed test ensure self-reflection and a greater awareness of all aspects of integrity. The basis is the European ALLEA Code, draft versions of the tool have been extensively evaluated by starting and senior researchers and by support staff. Mind the GAP is available to all researchers via the UGent Ufora learning platform.

The tool is financed with OJO resources from the Flemish government, aimed at supporting young researchers and already received an honourable mention as one of the best ten submissions (out of 43) to a European Council call for Best Practices in Promoting Academic Integrity during COVID-19.
