[FWO][HORIZON EUROPE] Europe’s BE READY partnership Launched — Funding Ahead for Infectious Disease Research with FWO Support
Be Ready Partnership
BE READY brings together funding organisations, research institutions and stakeholders across Europe and beyond to close critical gaps in pandemic preparedness research. Its mission is to enable coordinated action on host–pathogen interactions, disease mechanisms and development of medical countermeasures, including diagnostics, therapeutics and preventive strategies, using a One Health perspective.
The 2026 Open Call: Scope and Themes
“Advancing knowledge of host and pathogen dynamics to better combat emerging diseases.”
It supports innovative, interdisciplinary, multinational research projects that aim to:
- Better understand the pandemic potential of emerging and re-emerging pathogens (restricted to focused virus families in the call text)
- Investigate host responses and pathophysiology triggered by infection
- Identification and validation of targets and/or therapeutic susceptibilities
Consortia and funding
BE READY’s calls are jointly funded by participating national and regional research funders, meaning each participant receives funding from their own agency. The Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) is an official funder in BE READY (350K€/project). This means Flemish research groups can join consortia and receive FWO-administered funding for their participation—provided they meet FWO eligibility criteria (see the national annex of the call).
Consortia must include a minimum of three partners from three different eligible countries; up to six partners are allowed (with some flexibility for under-represented countries in specific cases). Non-funding countries’ researchers can still participate if they bring their own funding.
