[BOF] Uitzonderlijke verlenging van doctoraatsbeurs t.g.v. COVID-19-pandemie | Exceptional extension of the doctoral scholarship due to COVID-19 pandemic

Het doctoraatstraject van heel wat doctorandi liep tijdens de periode 1/3/2020 tot en met 28/2/2022 vertraging op door de COVID-19-pandemie. In veel gevallen wensen promotoren het doctoraatstraject van hun doctoraatsstudent met enkele maanden te verlengen om deze vertraging te compenseren en de doctoraatsstudent de kans te geven het doctoraat succesvol af te werken.

Hierbij is het interessant om te weten dat er een fiscale circulaire bestaat dit toelaat om een doctoraatsbursaal na afloop van de reguliere 48 maanden fiscaal vrijgestelde doctoraatsbeurs toch nog tot maximaal 6 maanden een doctoraatsbeurs te geven. Met andere woorden: een verlenging van het doctoraatstraject hoeft in dit geval niet in het duurdere statuut van wetenschappelijk medewerker, maar kan desgewenst als doctoraatsbursaal.

The PhD trajectory of some PhD students may have been delayed during the period 1/3/2020 to 28/2/2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In many cases, promoters wish to extend the PhD trajectory by several months to compensate for the delay and give the PhD student a chance to successfully complete their PhD.

Note the existence of a tax circular that allows to give a doctoral scholarship to a scholarshipholder for up to a maximum of 6 months after the expiry of the regular 48-month tax-exempted doctoral scholarship. In other words: the extension of the doctoral trajectory in such case does not have to be in the more expensive appointment of scientific researcher, but can be in the form of a tax-exempted doctoral scholarship if desired.
