[BOF] BOF Doctoral scholarships (DOC) – call 2022
Through the Special Research Fund (BOF), Ghent University awards each year about 50 PhD grants to predoctoral researchers, aimed at obtaining a doctoral degree within a time span of 4 years.
Attention, there is a major change in the conditions to be able to participate to this call.
This call is only open for:
- Candidates who are able to enter an eligible application for an FWO PhD Fellowship Fundamental Research (FO) or an FWO PhD Fellowship Strategic Basic Research (SB), both with deadline 1 March 2023.
- Candidates who have applied for an FWO PhD Fellowship Fundamental Research (FO) or an FWO PhD Fellowship Strategic Basic Research (SB) in 2021 ànd 2022.
Candidates who successfully obtain an BOF PhD Scholarship in 2022 are obliged to enter an application for an FWO PhD Fellowship Fundamental Research (FO) or an FWO PhD Fellowship Strategic Basic Research (SB) in 2023 or 2024.
If your candidate can submit an application to the FWO for one of the above FWO calls in 2023 or 2024, he/she will also be able to apply for a BOF doctoral mandate.
Please pay particular attention to the diploma requirements and scientific seniority requirements set by the FWO. Candidates with a master's degree awarded before March 2020 or a scientific seniority longer than 18 months at the time of the FWO deadline (March 1, 2023) are not eligible to submit an application to the FWO and are therefore also not eligible for a BOF doctoral mandate.
Candidates who already submitted an FWO application in 2021 and 2022 cannot submit a 3rd FWO application in 2023. However, they can still submit an application for a BOF doctoral mandate.
The objective of this adjustment is to encourage candidates to apply for external funding at the FWO. The FWO and the BOF are two different, unlinked funding channels. By encouraging candidates to apply for external financing at the FWO, the BOF hopes to maximise the number of candidates who obtain financing for their doctoral research.
