Book: how and where to find it?

Ghent University holds a very diverse collection of books, journals, theses, heritage material and much more, both in analogue and digital form.

The catalogue gives you an overview of what can be found in which library what is available online for Ugent users.

How do you use the catalogue to find books?

  • Select your language in the top right of your screen  (NL / EN)
  • Enter some title words and / or authors in the search window and start your search.
  • Use 'Alle filters' to filter your results by type, language, year, library or availability. Choose books in the facet Type to limit the search results to books.
  • Click on the preferred title in the results list

If the book is physically available:

  • Check the “library locations” to see which library has the book. Sometimes you have to expand the locations once or twice to see all copies and options.
  •  If the book is on an open shelf, you usually cannot reserve it. Make a note of the book's location code and go and fetch it.
(Some libraries allow you to click on “locate” to see the book route, which will give you a floor plan of the library indicating the exact shelf.)
  • If the book is held in a depot or currently on loan, you can reserve it. Reserve the book using the “Reserve item” button or request a scan using the “Scan request” button (this is not possible for all books).

If the book is available online

  • The “view online” section will redirect you to the publisher's website or the PDF.
  • Problems viewing books online? Check whether you have Ugent access.

Can't find the book in the catalogue? Request it via IBL.

Tips

  • Would you like to search only for books that are physically present in our libraries? Then select “In the library” from the outset.

  • Not all books are available for loan; some can only be consulted on site. This is always indicated under “library locations”.
